R.E.D. January Day 10

Well done to all the Pacers who have made it this far, and do congratulate yourself as well if the challenge has made you run, or walk, more than than you did last month even if you've missed a day or two.

How are you getting on ? Legs aching ? Back straining ? Partner complaining about the huge pile of sweaty running gear building up in the wash basket ? Combining it with Dry January, #Veganuary and #NoFunJanuary ?

I thought this morning was going fine, I was running a route I'd already run earlier in R.E.D. and despite having a bit of a back strain my legs were feeling less leaden, I hadn't had to stop gasping for breath once (unlike PECO, which turned into half a run, half a wheezy walk) and I was feeling pretty good. Run over, get on Strava and see how I've improved. Previous pace 10.08, today's pace 10.07. So much for it feeling like a good run then...

Press Report Janury 11th

The 3rd race of this season’s PECO cross country series was held on a sunny but cold Sunday morning at Roundhay Park. The Airecentre Pacers men’s team took to the course with verve and determination after coming in last in the previous race and to the surprise of everyone managed a narrow team victory in the Second Division. Scoring athletes for the Pacers were Leon Forster, Andrew Humphries, Owain Gwilym, Richard Walker, Graeme Cowling, Nick Jovanovic, Paul Grindley and David Cusack. The Ladies team also improved over last season and finished sixth, scoring athletes were Sally Haigh, Faye Cameron, Helen Alcock, Rachael Smith, Claire Hunter and Carly Dykes. Both teams now sit in 5th place overall.

Taylor Sebright-Pickard clocked 13.45 in the junior two mile race at Roundhay to take 20th position. Evie Walker and Grace Sebright-Pickard competed in the one mile event.

It was also a good weekend for the Pacer’s Ultra distance runners, Will Woodhead came 3rd in the 32 mile Sir Titus Trot along the route of the Leeds-Liverpool canal in a time of 4.49.40 . Gavin Birkett took on the legendary Fan Dance Black Edition, two mountain routes used as final selection for the SAS and organised by former members of the UK’s elite military. Gavin marched a total of 41k, climbed 1900 meters. The second march took place entirely at night in a howling gale in on the ice capped Brecon Beacons. Gavin said afterwards “blown off my feet numerous time and all in all bloody good fun but I will NOT be doing that again.”

Week 1 Leaderboard

*Sigh* So you manage to run every day in the week, and then Will goes out and does more distance than that in a single run.

Still a good strong start to January from the Pacers with a busy leaderboard reflecting the extra distance put in by the R.E.D. January challengers and those in marathon training.

If you think you did some hills this week, just look at the amount of climbing Gav Birkett did on the insane Fan Dance series. Two half marathons up mountains, one in the dark, on the same day !

R.E.D. January

The running year got off to a cracking start as a number of Pacers, sleek and rotund after the Christmas feasting season, signed up to try and run every single day in the most dismal month of the year. The mental health charity Mind have organised R.E.D. January as a both a fundraiser and because of the positive effects regular exercise can have on mental well being.

Sometimes you just need that little extra boost to persuade you to get your running shoes back on and pound the streets, beginners/returners groups, first Parkrun of the year or R.E.D. January, whatever it takes to get us up and out, it's all good.

So what happens if you fail to run on day 4 ? Well so what, just get going again on Day 5, and if that doesn't happen, because we all know the car breaks down, or the kids get flu, or the gerbil needs an emergency trip to the vet, well just get going again the following day. Run more than you did in December, or last January, or whatever target you'd like to set, you're still a winner.

To add to the frisson of the event though, Paul, Grand High Marshall of the Orange Army, has promised to buy a round of drinks for anyone who can complete the whole event, and if you are sure sure just how momentous a thing this offer is, here's a short list of things which happened the last time Paul opened his wallet....

  • 3 of The Beatles were still alive
  • Beer was under £1 a pint
  • It was still OK to like Gary Glitter
  •  Friday night takeaway meant dried Vesta packet curry
  • The Daily Mail still supported Hitler
